Great Falls National Park is located along the Potomac River at a section that includes the falls and Mather Gorge. The river builds up speed and force as it falls over a series of steep, jagged rocks and flows through a narrow gorge. The area is one of the country's most biologically diverse areas, home to more than 1400 plant species. At least 30 distinct natural vegetation communities have been identified by scientists. It provides habitat to more than 200 rare plant species. The geology is also greatly studied here. There are many unique rock formations in the natural structure of the gorge.

History buffs will enjoy walking the trail along George Washington's canal. Construction began in 1785 and was completed in 1802. They had to build locks that would raise boats 77 vertical feet. The canal system ended up only being used for 26 years.  You can still see remnants of the canal today.

The park is a popular place for many to come and enjoy the nature that is surrounded by this large metropolitan area. There are plenty of trails to hike that are not long and easy to navigate. There are also lots of picnic areas, horseback trails, rock climbing, and areas to enjoy a family gathering.

The Potomac River has great place to fish. Many pockets, nooks and other places that fish like to inhabit can be found all around the surrounding sections of this part of the river.
