Location of Lake Chelan Lake Chelan The first white visitors to the Chelan area were Alexander Ross of the Pacific Fur Company and David Thompson of the rival Northwest Company in the early 1800's. Both men were on wide-ranging explorations to become more familiar with the terrain and to establish fur trading outposts for commerce with the Indians. The first settlement was not until 1880 when the U.S. Army established Camp Chelan, which was only in use for 1 year before moving to Spokane. Chelan really began to grow in the 1890's with the influx of gold miners and the arrival of the first homesteaders. Today, over 100 years later, Chelan is a bustling town with a population of about 3,500 people and one of the most popular tourist destinations in Washington State. |
