Location of Pinellas County Heritage Village Museum Pinellas County Heritage Village Museum The Pinellas County Heritage Village Museum is home to some of the county’s most historic buildings. This is a 21-acre open-air village and museum amid a natural pine and palmetto landscape. The museum first opened in 1976, and is funded by the county. There is no admission fee at Heritage Village. You will want to wear comfortable walking shoes as you explore the exhibits. There are 23 historical structures and the museum to discover the past in. The McMullen-Coachman Log house is the oldest existing structure in Pinellas County being built around 1852. Discover upper middle-class lifestyles of early winter residents in the "House of Seven Gables", a 13-room Victorian home from 1907. Imagine the music playing in the reproduction of the original bandstand that had been in Williams Park in St. Petersburg. Visit the firehouse with a La France Fire Engine from 1917. Also to be explored is a railroad depot, a one-room school house, an early 1900’s mercantile store and service garage, as well as a doctor’s office. And don’t forget, you still have the museum to explore. It is recommended to allow at least two hours for your visit. Heritage Village offers school programs, and also a wide variety of special events and educational programs open to adults as well as children. At the Daniel McMullen Home for the Fiber Arts see demonstrations of traditional fiber arts, including quilting, rug-hooking, spinning, weaving, embroidery, and basketry. Other crafts demonstrated during special events in the village include woodworking, blacksmithing, and processing sugar cane. While visiting, you can also enjoy the Shirley McPherson Nature Trail. Learn how some plants were used by the early settlers in the area. While on the trail use the convenient guide to identify the different types of plant life. The guide uses numbers that correspond to trail signage to help you. Do you know the difference between Elderberry, Beautyberry, and Gallberry? Find them all along the trail and so much more. Heritage Village is open Tuesday through Sunday. They are closed on Mondays and major holidays. |
