Salvador Dali was born on May 11, 1904 in a small Spanish town in the foothills on the pyrenees near the French Boarder. He spent much of his childhood at his family's summer home in the coastal fishing village of Cadaques. After attending art school at the San Fernando Academy of Fine Arts in Madrid, Dali held his first one-man art show in Barcelona in 1925. International fame followed when three of his paintings were shown in the Third Annual Carnegie International Exhibition in Pittsburgh in 1928. One year later, Dali held his first one-man show in Paris.

The Salvador Dali Museum, located on the waterfront in downtown St. Petersburg, opened in March, 1982. the museum was built to house the largest private collection of Dali's work in the world, which was donated by Eleanor R. and A. Reynolds Morse from Cleveland, Ohio. Their extensive collection began in 1943 when they purchased their first Dali oil painting, "Daddy Longlegs of the Evening -Hope!" in 1943.

Today, the museum houses a comprehensive collection of Dali's work that spans his entire career and includes 95 original oil paintings, over 100 watercolors and drawings, nearly 1300 graphics and lots of Sculptures, objets d'art, and photographs.

The Salvador Dali Museum attracts visitors from all over the world to view these awe inspiring and thoughts provoking works of art. The museum is a must-see for anyone who wants to see why Salvador Dali is widely considered one of the 20th century's greatest and most controversial artists.
