Location of Tarpon Springs Sponge Docks Tarpon Springs Sponge Docks Tarpon Springs Sponge Dock is full of history. The sponge beds were discovered in the 1880's and spawned a new industry funding the Greek community. In 1905 young sponge divers came from Dodecanese Islands of Greece. It fast became the worlds largest sponge producing community. It still has the title of being the "sponge capital of the world". The docks are only a few blocks long but lined with shops offering everything from natural sponges harvested by local divers to swimwear and fantastic shells. We are sure that you will find that special gift for your loved ones. Don't forget to stop and try some of the local dishes that fill the air. Like authentic Greek dishes saganaki and stuffed rolled grape leaves known as dolmades. There are many cruises to choose from. Or if you would rather go deep sea fishing, you can take a trip that departs on a regular basis. If the sea is not your bag then you will enjoy just walking through the many great shops and checking out the sponge diving exhibitions. Either way we are sure this will be a hit for the whole family. This is a must see when you are in the area. |
