New Port Richey is located approximately 30 miles north of the Tampa/St. Petersburg area. The tranquil blue water of the Pithlachascotee ("Cotee") River winds through the heart of New Port Richey, as well as the downtown area, and is ideal for boating, canoeing and kayaking. Certainly one of the most scenic areas of New Port Richey, boaters will enjoy an abundance of wildlife and the lush greenery, and Spanish moss-covered pines, of the lower south. As an added treat, passerby's will get a glimpse of some of the areas most charming and historic homes - many of them the one-time riverfront homes of Hollywood royalty from the 1920's. For the land lubber, New Port Richey and the surrounding area offers more than 30 well-maintained parks, including the new 3,400 acre Werner Boyce Salt Springs State Park, located directly on the coast, and the centralized J.B. Starkey Wilderness Park featuring a natural and educational wilderness walk. Bird lovers flock to the New Port Richey area for the varied amount of native bird species, as well as migratory birding locations and critical nesting habitats that can be found. The abundance of birdlife has made several area destinations an official stop of the Florida Birding Trail, which promotes outdoor, ecological destinations throughout the State. New Port Richey is host to a number of cultural events and activities throughout the year. The Richey Suncoast Theatre, a community theatre located in the heart of the downtown Historic District, offers a lively array of dramas and musicals acted out by some of the community's most talented and aspiring actors. |
