Location of Boyd Hill Nature Park Boyd Hill Nature Park Boyd Hill Nature Park offers the perfect setting for peaceful reflection and passive recreation. Situated in the midst of a growing city in Florida's most densely populated county, the park is a precious oasis. There are 245 acres of unspoiled land that features more than three miles of trails and boardwalks, leading visitors through hardwood hammocks, sand pine scrub, pineflatwoods, willow marsh and lakeshore, representing many Florida ecosystems. The park's varied habitats and wildlife present excellent opportunities for individual and group study. The park was named after former St. Petersburg Park Superintendent, Boyd Hill, who served the city until his death in 1957. Since the city acquired the property in 1947, the park has undergone many changes. Boyd Hill was instrumental in the city's decision to preserve the area in its natural state for public use. After being closed for several years the park reopened in 1980. Metal sculptor Paul Eppling was commissioned to build four large sculptures for the park. At Wax Myrtle Pond stand two large armadillos; two whimsical, dragon like creatures can also be found; "Narcissus" lives at the edge of the pond near the picnic area, and the "Tree Dragon" or "Forest Mentor" is perched on an oak limb at the rear entrance of the Nature Center. The artist made these sculptures out of scrap car parts. A picnic area equipped with grills and sheltered tables northeast of the Nature Center is available to the public during park hours. Checklists for birds, butterflies, trees and a self-guiding tour brochure are available at both the Information Center and the Nature Center. |
