Location of Homosassa Springs Wildlife State Park Homosassa Springs Wildlife State Park The park is located 75 miles north of Tampa/St. Petersburg, with the entrance located on U.S. 19 in Homosassa Springs. Begin your voyage from the visitors center of Homosassa Springs Wildlife State Park with a quiet boat ride down Pepper Creek. You will see Florida plant and wild life along the ride with a volunteer guide explaining things you can see along the way. (Look up and be sure to see the Osprey nest that the guide will be sure to show you.) At the end of the ride, enter into the world of manatees and alligators as well as other animals and birds native to Florida. All residents of the park are native to Florida except for the hippopotamus that was born in 1960 at the San Diego Zoo and moved to the park in 1966. At that time the park was privately owned and had African animals. When the state took over the park in the 1980's, they decided to allow the hippo to remain as it had been living there so long. Of the Florida animals, you can see many types of birds, alligators, fish, bears, and of course manatees. The park is a refugee for injured manatees. New to the park is the Reptile House. Learn about all the snakes there are in Florida, especially the poisonous ones that you should be able to identify and avoid! View the fish and manatees through the underwater 'fishbowl'. Take in the daily educational programs about the manatees, alligators, and also wildlife encounter. There is also a gift shop, snack bar, and picnic area. This park is run mostly through the help of some wonderful volunteers. They have over 300 volunteers with many that have put in over 1000 hours and several with over 2000 hours. They are ready to help and answer your questions. |
