Location of the Colonial Cemetery Colonial Cemetery Colonial Park was the second cemetery in colonial Savannah. It was the burying ground for the city from 1750 until it was closed in 1853. Many victims of the Great Yellow Fever Epidemic of 1820 were buried here. Nearly 700 citizens of Savannah died that year. There were also two physicians who died caring for the fever stricken people. There are many distinguished dead buried here. Archibald Bulloch was the first President of Georgia. James Habersham was Postmaster General under three presidents. Lachlan McIntosh was a Major General in the Continental Army and Colonel John S. McIntosh was a hero of the War with Mexico. Samuel Elbert was a Revolutionary War soldier and Governor of Georgia. Captain Denis L. Cottineau de Kerloguen aided John Paul Jones in the engagement between the 'Bon Homme Richard' and the 'Serapis'. The remains of Major General Nathanael Greene, who died in 1786, reposed in the Graham vault until they were reinterred in 1901 in Johnson Square. This is just a few of the historic figures of Colonial Cemetery. The Cemetery became a city park in 1896. KAT'S VIEW The Colonial Cemetery was filled with very interesting people. They had a man who worked with George Washington. They had people who died fighting from dueling pistols. It was pretty cool for a bunch of rotting dead people. No offence to the dead people. The cemetery was pretty cool. The gravestones looked almost ancient. I liked the cemetery. It was interesting, very interesting. |
