Location of the Savannah History Museum Savannah History Museum The Savannah History Museum is housed in the old railroad passenger train shed in Savannah's Historic Landmark District. Here you will learn about the history and development of the area. Exhibits begin with the first settlers to the area and the Indians and continue all the way to Forrest Gump's bench! There is a wonderful display showing the changes of women's clothing through the years. Savannah is a town where the women adhered to very strict rules on the types of clothing worn. The display does a terrific job showcasing this. Center stage in the museum is the Central of Georgia Steam Locomotive Baldwin #403. This train has been beautifully restored and preserved. The railroad in Savannah was a major factor in the transportation of goods both local and from shipping. The military history exhibits include a wooden torpedo from the Civil War. The only one in existence to be intact. In fact, only two have been found! Next to the History Museum is the Roundhouse Railroad Museum which you will also want to visit. The museums are built over the site of one of America's bloodiest battles that was fought in the Revolutionary War on October 9, 1779. Also in the same building as the History Museum you will find the Savannah Visitors Center and the Whistle Stop Cafe, serving breakfast and lunch in a railroad car setting. Be sure to include this as one of your first stops in your visit to Savannah. KAT'S VIEW The Savannah History Museum had Forrest Gump's bench. It even had his suitcase! It didn't have his box of chocolates though. They also had a collection of old dresses. They had a torpedo that was made out of wood. There are only two in existence. It was made out of a beer keg. |
