Hawaii is one of the premier vacation destination in the world. It has a rich history with many wonderful places to visit when you are on vacation.Beaches, beautiful scenery, and a wide variety of activities and attractions await you. Hawaii's history in story and legend is ancient and proud, dating back at least a thousand years before American colonies became a nation in 1776. The Hawaiians were a people without writing, who preserved their history in chants and legends. Much of the early history has disappeared with the death of the kahunas and other learned men whose function it was to pass on this knowledge, by means of chants and legends, to succeeding generations. Modern Hawaiian history begins on January 20, 1778, when Captain James Cook's expedition made its first contact with the Hawaiian people on the islands of Kauai and Niihau. Captain Cook was not the first man to "discover" the Hawaiian Islands. He was the first known European to arrive. The Territory of Hawaii was created on July 7, 1898, when Congress passed the Newlands Resolution annexing Hawai'i to the United States. The formal ceremony took place in Honolulu on August 12, 1898. The biggest event in the history of the Territory of Hawaii was the attack on Pearl Harbor and World War II. Governor Poindexter declared martial law, suspended the writ of habeas corpus, closed the local courts, and turned over the powers of government to the military. President Roosevelt approved this action, and the military ruled Hawaii until October 24, 1944. Hawai'i was admitted as the 50th state of the United States of America on August 21, 1959 by proclamation of President Dwight D. Eisenhower. Admission Day is a state holiday in Hawai'i, observed on the third Friday in August. |
