Location of Akatsuka Orchid Gardens Akatsuka Orchid Gardens Mr. Moriyasu Akatsuka has been in the orchid business for decades, bringing with him many years of orchid experience. Established in 1974, Akatsuka Orchid Gardens is a growing, thriving orchid business. Prior to his establishment here in Hawaii, Mr. Akatsuka worked in a family orchid nursery in Japan. Recently, Mr. Akatsuka constructed new greenhouses for the garden, and expanded his retail store. There are over 1,000 blooming orchids on display, including his "mother plants" and their hybrid offspring. Akatsuka Orchid Gardens is located on the Big Island of Hawai'i on Highway 11, right on the way to the Hawaii Volcanoes National Park, between the 22 and 23 mile marker. If you're planning a trip to the Hawaii Volcanoes National Park, stop by to see our display room. We offer a free self guided tour of the gardens, and we are open 7 days a week, from 8:30 a.m. -5:00 p.m. The building has easy access and is wheel chair accessible. We invite you to come and see our blooming display of orchids and cut flowers. While you're here, stop in and browse through our unique gift shop. You're sure to find that special gift for that special someone on your list! Akatsuka Orchid Gardens uses a unique process that produces beautiful and hardy orchids. With years of orchid experience, Akatsuka Orchid Gardens is a growing enterprise, with award winning flowers. Upon entering the gardens, you are greeted by a cool, refreshing light breeze. The blooming orchids with their vibrant colors and wonderful fragrance, flow throughout the garden and transcends all time. A hush calm befalls you...at Akatsuka Orchid Gardens. Welcome! Generally, orchids prefer the lower elevations where the climate is more temperate. However, the temperatures in Volcano range from the mid 40's to 70 degrees, year-round. In 2002, Mr. Moriyasu Akatsuka expanded the gardens with special considerations to provide an optimum growing environment in a unique setting. Within this unique setting, the mother plants are revered, the hybrid orchids are displayed, and the immature hybrid orchids are sheltered. Hybrid processing begins with the mother plants. With meticulous selection and exceptional care, a mother plant is bred, producing award winning blooms in 3 to 5 years. At each stage, the plants are repotted and placed on tables. With more than 200,000 orchids, space is precious. Rolling tables allow the aisle to move with the gardener, and can also hold more plants than stationary tables. Every year, additional orchid and anthurium plants are propagated to ensure continuous blooming plants and cut flowers for arrangements. |
