Bishop Museum was founded in 1889 by Charles Reed Bishop in honor of his late wife, Princess Bernice Pauahi Bishop, the last descendant of the royal Kamehameha family. The Museum was established to house the extensive collection of Hawaiian artifacts and royal family heirlooms of the Princess, and has expanded to include millions of artifacts, documents and photographs about Hawai‘i and other Pacific island cultures.

Today, Bishop Museum is the largest museum in the state and the premier natural and cultural history institution in the Pacific, recognized throughout the world for its cultural collections, research projects, consulting services and public educational programs. It also has one of the largest natural history specimen collections in the world.

Designated the State Museum on Natural and Cultural History in 1988, Bishop Museum tells the full story of Hawai‘i in relationship to its place in the Pacific and the world. It is a place where families learn about their island heritage and discover the wonders of science through fun hands-on exhibits and programs.  It is also a visitor destination where people from around the world learn about Hawai‘i’s multicultural and diverse communities.

Bishop Museum hosts a number of permanent exhibits designed to inspire imagination and serve as a resource for learning. In the new Science Adventure Center, visitors are invited to interact with the natural environment of Hawai‘i like never before with exciting exhibits that invite you to play the role of scientist. You can control volcanic eruptions, control deep sea submersibles, see lava melt before your eyes, investigate the DNA of invasive and native species, and so much more. Guests can also enjoy daily tours of exhibits, a Hawaiian music and Hula show, Native Hawaiian crafting and demonstrations, garden tours, the Hawaii Sports Hall of Fame, planetarium shows and special traveling exhibits.
