Location of Queen Emma Summer Palace Queen Emma Summer Palace Five minutes by car from the center of Honolulu stands Hanaiakamalama Named after John Young II's family homestead on the Big Island, it is translated: "foster child of the moon". The summer retreat of Queen Emma, wife of King Kamehameha IV is preserved by the Daughters of Hawai‘i in a charming Hawaiian-Victorian setting. Queen Emma, born in 1836, was one of the earliest symbols of the islands' cosmopolitan culture, for she was descended both from Hawaiian chiefs and from John Young, an Englishman who became the friend and advisor of the great Kamehameha I. Hanaiakamalama, now known as the Queen Emma Summer Palace was the "mountain" home of Queen Emma Na‘ea, wife of Kamehameha IV. Queen Emma used the home, which is located in historic Nu‘uanu Valley, as a retreat from the hot and dusty climate of 19th century Honolulu. Queen Emma, her husband, King Kamehameha IV, and their son, Prince Albert Edward enjoyed their stays at Hanaiakamalama where they planted rose and other flowering bushes and mango trees. Sadly, the young prince died suddenly at age four and his father died within the year marking the end of the Kamehameha era. A reflection of the queen's Hawaiian and British heritage, Queen Emma Summer Palace houses Victorian and Hawaiian treasures, and features rare artifacts and personal memorabilia of the royalty of Hawai‘i. Take a stroll in the beautiful gardens. Enjoy the magnificent trees and recall the history that surrounds you. Remember the happy moments Queen Emma spent in the valley among her flowers, entertaining guests, and playing with little Prince Albert. |
