Sandpoint is a lakeside paradise located on the shores of Lake Pend Oreille in northern Idaho. The lake offers outstanding fishing and boating and the town is also near the Schweitzer Mountain Ski Resort that offers year round outdoor recreation including skiing, snowboarding, cross-country skiing and snowmobiling in winter and hiking, mountain biking and horseback riding in the summer. The settlement of Sandpoint dates back to 1880 when a general store was opened that also dealt in furs. The city grew after the Great Northern Railroad began operation in the area in 1892. Timber was its main industry in the early years. Due to the vast size of the lake, the Farragut Naval Base was built during World War II and trained more than 300,000 seamen during the war. Today, the town is growing with many tourist activities. |
