Jean Lafitte National Historical Park
Barataria Preserve
6588 Barataria Boulevard
Marrero, Louisiana 70072
Voice: 504-589-2330 ext. 10

The Barataria Preserve is open daily from 9:00 am to 5:00 pm except for Christmas Day and during Mardi Gras. This 20,000 acres park includes bayous, swamps, marshes, forests, alligators, nutrias, and over 300 species of birds.

Boardwalks and dirt trails wind through the park. The waterways can be explored by canoe or kayak if you feel brave. You can check out the visitors center and get a map so you don't get turned around. You may also learn how the Mississippi River created this area.

Get your children involved with the Junior Ranger program and they can feel good about helping to keep this area pristine when they grow up.

There are free ranger-guided walks daily at 10:00 am on preserve trails so if you would like to learn a little more then just walking though the park take a guided tour and ask questions about what you see, hear, and smell. There are other guided tours that you can take advantage of such as the sunset strolls. Saturday morning canoe treks in the spring and fall. If you are a really brave soul take a moon lit stroll through the swamp in a canoe.
