Location of the Dr. Samuel D. Harris National Museum of Dentistry Dr. Samuel D. Harris National Museum of Dentistry Discover the exciting world of teeth at the only museum of its kind. The Dr. Samuel D. Harris National Museum of Dentistry, an affiliate of the Smithsonian Institution, is a lively national center where visitors can discover the rich history of dentistry and learn the importance of a healthy smile. The permanent exhibition, 32 Terrific Teeth, is home of celebrity smiles, Her Majesty’s Crowns (featuring Queen Victoria’s gilded dental instruments), George Washington’s not-so-wooden teeth (they are made of ivory!) and a Tooth Jukebox that plays vintage dental commercials. The collection of the world’s first dental school, founded in 1840 as the Baltimore College of Dental Surgery, forms the nucleus of the museum. Children can play dentist in an interactive learning laboratory featuring a kid-size dental chair and hands-on models that teach tooth anatomy and how to brush and floss properly. The museum also features the first exhibition to highlight the impact of the Human Genome Project on dentistry and oral health. Learn how to identify victims of a mock disaster, and take an interactive odyssey into the world of saliva. The Museum offers a variety of changing exhibitions and celebrations for the family throughout the year. It is located a short walk from Baltimore’s Inner Harbor, on the campus of the University of Maryland, Baltimore. |
