President John Quincy Adams
135 Adams Street
Quincy, Massachusetts 02169
Voice: 617-770-1175

The sixth president was born in Braintree, Massachusetts on July 11, 1767. He became a secretary to his father in Europe, learning valuable language and writing skills. He later graduated from Harvard College and became a lawyer. In 1802, he was elected to the United States Senate and was appointed Minister to Russia.

While serving under President Monroe, Adams became one of America’s greatest Secretaries of State. After a messy election, Adams became President of the United States in 1825 under the Democratic-Republican Party. During his years of presidency he fought to bring together the people of America.

After being defeated in the campaign of 1828 Adams returned to his home in Massachusetts. In 1830, he was elected to the House of Representatives in the Plymouth district and stayed there the rest of his life.

In 1848 Adams suffered a stroke and died two days later. He was buried at the First Parish Church in Quincy.
