Great Falls, the largest city in north-central Montana, is located on the Missouri River near a series of 5 waterfalls. The area has a rich history that dates back to 1805 when the Lewis and Clark Expedition spent nearly a month portaging the falls. You can view those falls as well as a Lewis and Clark Interpretive Center on the River's Edge Trail, a 10 mile paved walking and biking trails alongside the river. Nearly a dozen museums in and around town will help you learn more about the city's heritage. The Historic Great Falls Walking Tour will take you through the original township site of Great Falls, which is on the National Register of Historic Places and features 216 buildings dating back as early as 1885. The Bungalow, Prairie, Colonial, Revival, Queen Anne, Victorian and Second Empire architectural styles can be seen on the tour. Outdoor activities and abundant in the area with fishing, swimming, water-skiing, golf, biking and bird watching within the city limits and several ski slopes nearby. |
