Welcome to the New York Aquarium - where the City meets the Sea. As the only aquarium in New York City and part of the largest network of metropolitan wildlife parks in the country, the New York Aquarium holds a special place in the mission of the Wildlife Conservation Society - To save wildlife and wild places around the globe.

With exhibits featuring over 8,000 animals, the Aquarium offers diversity, superb viewing, and world-renowned scientific expertise that assures a rewarding experience and the knowledge that people can make a difference in the ocean world around them.  Learn about animals living as far away as the Southwest coast of Africa and the Arctic to those found locally in our own Hudson River.

Whether you're getting wrapped up in the tentacles of jellies in the Alien Stingers exhibit, being awe-struck by walruses in the rocky coastline of Sea Cliffs, or cheering on California sea lions during their Aqua theater presentations, you're always close to some of the world's most amazing wildlife.

Ayveq(Eye vuk') is a walrus that comes from St. Lawrence Island in the Bering Strait, between Alaska and Siberia. Ayveq is one of three walrus that were brought back from this remote island in 1994. Eskimos still hunt walrus and the Aquarium brought back Ayveq to live in Sea Cliffs in New York, otherwise he might have been taken as part of the Eskimo hunt. At that time he was only 150 lbs. and could be held in a dog kennel. Now he is over 1200 lbs.! The two other walrus that were brought back were Uupa (Ou pa) and Kulusiq (Coo lu soock'). These "babies" joined Nuka, a female that has been at the Aquarium for over 16 years. She was rescued as an orphan from Barrow, AK. They all can be seen in Sea Cliffs where the babies are getting bigger and bigger. Nuka is full grown and weighs over 1600 lbs! Avyeq, the only male, will get even bigger.
