President Martin Van Buren
1013 Old Post Road
Kinderhook, New York 12106
Voice: 518-758-6986

Our eighth president was born December 5th, 1782, in Kinderhook, New York as the son of a tavernkeeper and farmer. He became a lawyer and made himself involved in politics. After taking part in New York political organizations, he was elected to the United States Senate in 1821. In 1827, he was appointed to Secretary of State by Andrew Jackson, and became Jackson’s most trusted political advisor.

Van Buren later became Jackson’s Vice President in 1832. By the next election, he became President of the United States, running under the democratic party. Following the presidencies of Jackson and Van Buren came one of the most devastating economic depressions in history. The depression was not resolved until decades later.

Van Buren was convinced that the depression was caused by reckless spending in businesses. He fought the creation of a new national banking system, and established an independent treasury system for government.

Martin Van Buren was defeated in the 1840 election and went back to his home in New York, where he died in 1862.
