In 1810, Jonathan Hale, a farmer from Glastonbury, Connecticut settled in the Cuyahoga Valley with his young family. Living in a one-room log cabin, the family prospered. By 1824, with the coming of the Ohio and Erie Canal, Hale began planning the construction of a permanent home for his family. Begun in 1825, the original brick, mortar, and wood framings used to construct the home were manufactured by Jonathan from materials available on his land.

Today, the Hale Farm and Village is an outdoor living history museum that depicts life during the years of the American Civil War. Costumed interpreters describe life in the Western Reserve and their struggle with the impact of the war. Hale Farm and Village features 21 historic buildings to tour and many talented craftspeople.
