President William McKinley
40 South Main Street
Niles, Ohio 44446
Voice: 330-652-1704

Our twenty-fifth president was born on January 29, 1843 in Niles, Ohio. He briefly attended Allegheny College and enlisted in the Union Army during the Civil War. At the end of the war, he achieved the rank of brevet major of volunteers. McKinley then studied law and opened an office in Canton, Ohio.

McKinley was elected to Congress at the age of 34. He spent 14 years in the House and became a leading Republican and tariff expert. In 1891, he was elected Governor of Ohio, and served two terms. William McKinley won the presidential election of 1896 by the largest majority of popular votes since 1872.

By the time McKinley entered the office, the depression of 1893 was almost over. To face the issue of money, he called on Congress to enact the highest tariff in history. McKinley’s Administration dealt mostly with foreign policy. The United States was thrown into the 100-day war, in which the Philippines, Guam, and Puerto Rico were annexed.

In the election of 1900, McKinley was elected to a second term. This term came to a tragic and sudden end when he was shot twice at the Buffalo Pan-American Exposition. William McKinley died eight days later on September 14, 1901 from gangrene. He was originally buried in West Lawn Cemetery in Canton, Ohio, and was later moved to McKinley Memorial also in Canton.
