The Boal Mansion is the site of the Columbus Chapel containing the most important collection of Christopher Columbus artifacts in north America, inherited by Boal descendants of Columbus. The Chapel was brought to the Boal Estate in 1909 from the Columbus family castle in Spain. It contains Columbus' Admiral's Desk, two pieces of the True Cross, Columbus family archives (1453-1908), and an exceptional collection of European art (1400's to 1700's). The marble cross over the door and the door itself are from the original chapel. The door is 16th century and is made of European oak. The hand carved panels are of mahogany. The furniture in the chapel is all hand carved from the 17th century. You will learn that most of what is known about Christopher Columbus here in America is totally false. He did not die a pauper or in jail, but rather was an extremely wealthy man when he died.

The Boal Mansion is still home to the Boal family descendants. The first Boal to come here was David Boal. He built a two room stone cabin whose outside wall you can still see. His son, also named David, added onto the house. He opened a tavern and the village grew around it. It was named Boalsburg in 1823 with the establishment of the post office in his honor. The contents of the house are all original. The family history is impressive. There are links to many figures from history. As you tour the house you will learn about many of the famous people that the family is related to and many of the things that the family has accomplished. You will be amazed by many of the items you will see here.
