Location if Eisenhower National Historic Site Eisenhower National Historic Site This is the home of President and Mrs. Eisenhower. They purchased the farm in 1950 and "retired" here in 1961. They lived here in their only home after they had moved almost yearly during his military career. The Eisenhower's spent much of their time during his Presidency here at their farm. They both lived out the rest of their life here. Your tour of the Eisenhower farm begins at the Visitor Center of the Gettysburg National Park. Visits are only by shuttle bus and the bus runs every half hour. Most of your tour of the farm is self-guided and your time is not limited (other than to make the last shuttle bus back to the Visitor Center). It is suggested to plan at least 1 1/2 to 2 hours. When you arrive at the farm you can tour the Eisenhower home which retains nearly all its original furnishings. You will notice how the Eisenhower's lived a very simple life in an ordinary house. The house tour is done with a guide who can answer any question about the Eisenhower's that you may have. When through with your house tour you begin your self-guided tour of the grounds. You can explore the gardens (that still have original Eisenhower roses) and tea house, the skeet range, the Farm 2 (where most of the cattle operation was), the secret service office, Ike's putting green, guest house, and the barn that also houses the garage with their vehicles. Children from 7 to 12 years old will enjoy doing the Junior Secret Service Program. Receive the Junior Secret Service Training Manual provided and complete the activities. This is a fun way to learn about the Eisenhower family and what is involved in guarding a President. Some of the activities involve learning about the President and his accomplishments; interrogation of a "suspicious" looking staff member; a White House Detail Aptitude Test; and security planning. When completed (parents will want to plan at least 2 hours to complete) submit the manual to a staff member where you will be presented with a certificate and a badge. KAT'S VIEW It was pretty cool here. You could do this secret agent activity if you are a kid. They had an old remote control for their TV. the house was pretty nice. Two rooms were pretty unique. The red room and the yellow room are the guest rooms where some important dignitaries have stayed. Mrs. Eisenhower's bathroom was very pink and so was her bedroom. The grandkids had a nice playhouse out behind the BBQ area. |
