Location of the Rupp House History Center The Rupp House History Center Visitors to the History Center will learn about the Battle of Gettysburg through the eyes of John and Caroline Rupp, whose 1863 house was caught in the middle of the fight for Cemetery Hill during the three day battle. There are four parlors in the center, each highlighting one day of the battle plus the aftermath. Tour at your own pace through the exhibits and activities where you can see, hear, and touch the past and present. Learn about the Rupp family that lived here during the battle. As the battle raged around their house on the night of July 2, Caroline fled with their six children to the safety of John's Father's house. John spent the three days of the battle hidden in his basement as Union troops fired from his front porch and Confederate troops fired from his back porch. The Rupp House History Center is a project of the Friends of the National Parks of Gettysburg. There is no charge to visit the History Center. KAT'S VIEW Here, things were more to the point of touching and trying things out, like their rifle. Tied to the rifle were all the things a Civil War soldier would have carried. It was very heavy, I couldn't lift it up at all. There was a model of Mr. Rupp hiding in his cellar like he did during the battle. I liked that you could touch all the stuff and not just have to look at it. |
