Location of the Wharton Esherick Studio The Wharton Esherick Studio Wharton Esherick (1887 - 1970) was among the vanguard of artists who created an American sculpture style early in the 20th century. Working primarily in wood, he extended his sculptural forms to furniture, furnishings, and interiors, which are now in major American Museums and private collections. Joy, freedom and humor abound in more than 200 of his works - paintings, woodcuts, sculpture, furniture, furnishings, utensils and models - exhibited in the Studio. The Studio, with its tapered stone walls, multi-color tower, patchwork floor of oddly-shaped scraps and cantilevered deck, utilizes conventional material in new and exciting forms. Built over a 40 year period, the Studio reflects his changing styles from organic to expressionist to the lyrical free forms for which he is best known. Nothing escaped his attention, he carved the latches and light fixtures, forged the hinges and shaped the copper sinks. This unusual combination of an artist's works exhibited in the studio in which they were made encourages the visitor to enter the home and lifestyle of this imaginative and amazingly productive artist. To maintain the ambiance of the artist's home - without signs and glass display cases - the Studio is presented through guided tours for which reservations are required. To protect the floors, visitors are requested to wear low heeled shoes. |
