Ingredients:

1 1/2 cups sifted flour
2 1/2 teaspoons baking powder
1/4 teaspoon salt
1/3 cup sugar
1 egg, well beaten
1/2 cup milk
1 tablespoon melted shortening
1/2 teaspoon grated orange rind

Directions:

Sift flour once, measure, add baking powder, salt and sugar and sift again. Beat egg, add milk and melted shortening and blend well. Add sifted dry ingredients and mix thoroughly.  Drop from a teaspoon into deep hot fat preheated to 375 degrees F. and fry until golden brown, turning once. Drain on unglazed paper and dredge, while still warm, in fine granulated sugar.

Makes from 12 to 15 doughnuts
