1 cup sliced pitted dates (7 1/4 ounce package)
1 cup boiling water
2 cups sifted cake flour
1 teaspoon baking powder
1 teaspoon baking soda
1/2 teaspoon salt
1/2 cup shortening
1 cup brown sugar, firmly packed
1 egg
1 teaspoon vanilla
1/2 cup chopped nuts

Add boiling water to dates and set aside to cool. Sift flour once, measure, and resift twice with the baking powder, baking soda and salt. Cream shortening with brown sugar until light and fluffy. Add the egg and beat well. Add sifted dry ingredients alternately with date mixture, beating until smooth after each addition. Add vanilla and nuts and blend. Bake in a greased 9x9x2 pan in a 350 degree oven 40 to 45 minutes, or until done. Sift confectioners' sugar over the top of the cake or frost as desired.
