2 cups sifted cake flour
1 teaspoon baking soda
1/2 teaspoon salt
1/2 cup shortening
1 cup sugar
2 eggs
2 squares unsweetened chocolate, melted
1 cup buttermilk or soured milk
1 teaspoon vanilla

Sift flour once, measure and resift twice with the soda and salt. Cream shortening, add sugar gradually and cream together until light and fluffy. Add eggs, one at a time, beating well after each addition. Add cooled chocolate and blend. Add sifted dry ingredients alternately with buttermilk, beating until smooth after each addition. Add vanilla and blend. Pour into 2 greased 9 inch layer cake pans and bake in a 350 degree oven for about 25 minutes, or until done. Frost as desired. For a loaf cake, pour batter into a 9x12x2 pan and bake for about 30 minutes, or until done.
