4 squares unsweetened chocolate
1 1/4 cups milk
3/4 cup brown sugar, firmly packed
2 1/2 cups sifted cake flour
1 teaspoon baking soda
1/2 teaspoon salt
2/3 cup shortening
1 cup sugar
3 eggs
1 teaspoon vanilla
Fudge frosting

Cut chocolate into small pieces and melt in milk over hot water. Blend with a rotary beater, add brown sugar and stir until smooth. Set aside to cool. Sift flour once, measure and resift with baking soda and salt. Cream shortening, gradually add sugar and continue to cream until light and fluffy. Add eggs, one at a time, beating well after each addition. Add vanilla and blend. Add flour alternately with chocolate mixture, beating until smooth after each addition. Pour into two greased 9 inch layer cake pans and bake in a 350 degree oven for 30 minutes, or until done. Cool and spread fudge frosting between the layers and on top and sides.
