2 cups sifted cake flour
1 teaspoon baking soda
3/4 teaspoon salt
1 teaspoon ginger
1 teaspoon cinnamon
1/2 cup shortening
1/2 cup sugar
1 egg
3/4 cup molasses
1 cup buttermilk or soured milk


Sift flour once, measure and resift twice with the baking soda, salt and spices. Cream shortening, add sugar gradually and cream together until mixture is light and fluffy. Add egg and beat well. Add molasses and beat to blend. Add sifted dry ingredients alternately with buttermilk, beating until smooth after each addition.

Pour batter into greased 9x9x2 pan and bake in a 350 degree oven about 45 to 50 minutes, or until done. Dust top with sifted confectioners' sugar and serve slightly warm or cold. May be reheated and served warm.
