1 2/3 cups sifted cake flour
1 cup sugar
1/2 teaspoon salt
1 1/2 teaspoons baking powder
1/3 cup shortening
1 egg
2/3 cup milk
1 teaspoon vanilla

Sift flour once, measure and resift twice with the sugar, salt and baking powder. Add shortening and cut in with a pastry blender or mix at medium speed of the electric mixer until the mixture resembles coarse meal. Add egg and 1/3 of the milk and beat until the batter is smooth. Add remaining milk and vanilla and beat until blended. Pour batter into greased cup cake pans, filling them not more than 2/3 full and bake in a 350 degree over 20 to 25 minutes, or until done. This will make about 2 dozen small cup cakes. Frost as desired.
