Ingredients:

1/2 cup light brown sugar
1/2 cup granulated sugar
1/2 cup butter
1 egg
1/4 teaspoon salt
1 1/2 cups sifted flour
1 teaspoon baking powder
1 teaspoon vanilla

Filling:

1/2 pound dates, pitted and cut in pieces
1/4 cup cream
1/4 cup water
1/4 teaspoon grated orange rind

Directions:

Cream butter, beat in sugar. Add egg, beat thoroughly. Add sifted dry ingredients, then vanilla. Pat in rectangle 1/2 inch thick. Spread with filling. (this dough may be prepared in advance and bake when desired)

Filling:

Blend and cook, stirring constantly until mixture thickens. Cool. Add 1 teaspoon vanilla. Spread on cookie dough. Roll like jelly roll. Wrap in waxed paper, chill overnight in refrigerator. Cut in thin slices. Bake to medium brown in moderately hot oven, 375 degrees F.
