Apple Betty
Ingredients:
1 cup brown sugar, firmly packed
1 cup water
1/8 teaspoon salt
grated rind of 1 orange
3 cups bread crumbs
1/4 cup butter, melted
3 cups peeled apple slices
Directions:
Combine the sugar, water, salt and orange rind and simmer over low heat for 10 minutes. Combine the bread crumbs and melted butter and toss until the crumbs are coated. Arrange alternate layers of crumbs and apples in a greased baking dish, reserving enough crumbs for the top. Pour the syrup over the layers, cover and bake in a 350 degree oven for about 45 minutes, or until the apples are tender. Uncover during the last 15 minutes of baking to brown slightly. Serve hot or cold with cream.
