1 3/4 cups sifted cake flour
2 teaspoons baking powder
1/2 teaspoon salt
1/4 cup shortening
1 cup sugar
1 egg
1/2 teaspoon vanilla
2/3 cup milk


Sift flour once, measure, add baking powder and salt and sift together three times. Cream shortening with sugar until light and fluffy. Add egg and vanilla and beat well. Add flour alternately with milk, beating until smooth after each addition. Pour batter into a greased 8 inch square pan and bake in a 350 degree oven for about 35 minutes, or until done. Cut in squares and serve with any desired fruit sauce.
