3 cups sifted flour
4 teaspoons baking powder
2 tablespoons sugar
1 teaspoon salt
1/2 cup shortening
1 1/4 cups milk
1 quart strawberries, sweetened


Sift flour once, measure and resift with baking powder, sugar and salt. Cut in shortening until the mixture resembles coarse meal. Add milk to make a soft dough. Divide in half. Pat one half into a greased 9-inch layer cake pan, brush with melted butter and cover with the second half. Bake in a 450 degree oven for about 30 minutes, or until done. Separate the layers, spread quickly with butter and put together with half the sweetened berries. Top with remaining berries. Cut into wedges to serve and pass cream or slightly sweetened whipped cream.
