1 cup sliced, pitted dates
1 cup boiling water
1 1/2 cups sifted flour
1 teaspoon baking soda
3/4 teaspoon salt
2 tablespoons butter
1 cup brown sugar, firmly packed
1 egg
1/2 cup chopped nuts
1 teaspoon vanilla


Pour water over the dates and allow to stand while preparing the other ingredients. Sift flour once, measure, add baking soda and salt and sift again. Cream butter and sugar together until well blended, then add egg and beat well. Add dry ingredients alternately with the date mixture, beating until smooth after each addition. Add nuts and vanilla and blend. Pour into a 1 quart mold, cover with foil or a tight fitting cover and set on a rack in a deep kettle. Fill bottom of kettle with hot water just to top of rack, cover kettle closely and steam for about 2 hours. Serve warm.
