1/2 pound chopped, dried figs
1 cup water
1 cup sifted flour
3/4 teaspoon baking powder
2/3 cup sugar
1/2 teaspoon nutmeg
1/2 teaspoon salt
1/3 cup shortening
1 cup fine bread crumbs
2 eggs, beaten
1 teaspoon extract of orange


Chop figs, add water and simmer, covered, over low heat for 10 minutes. Sift flour once, measure, add baking powder, sugar, nutmeg and salt and sift again. Combine shortening and bread crumbs with a pastry blender, add beaten eggs and beat well. Add the cooked, cooled figs, then the sifted dry ingredients and blend. Add extract and pour into a greased 1 1/2 quart mold. Cover closely with foil or a tight fitting cover, set on a rack and steam for 1 1/2 hours, or until done. Serve warm with an orange sauce.
