Cook in double boiler until thick. Remove from fire; add butter and vanilla. Cool; add beaten egg whites or reserve for a meringue. Pour into baked crust. If meringue is used add 4 tablespoons sugar to stiffly beaten whites, spread on return to slow oven to brown, add boiling water, cook to cream, stir.
