Rhode Island is divided into 39 local municipalities. Although there are five counties, there is no actual county government. Rhode Island offers a variety of community environments to suit any lifestyle, ranging from revitalized urban areas like Providence (the state capital), to attractive suburban towns like Lincoln and Portsmouth. The northwest, southwest, and southeast corners of the state feature more rural settings. Rhode Island is especially well known for its historic and seaside communities like Newport and Bristol. There are also a number of bay and offshore islands that offer residential and recreational opportunities, such as Block Island and Jamestown. |
