Location of Elegba Folklore Society Elegba Folkore Society The Elegba Folklore Society celebrates the African and African American heritage with many celebrations throughout the year. They have annual events in June, August, and December. "Juneteenth, A Freedom Celebration", on the third weekend in June in collaboration with the Richmond Slave Trail Commission, is the gateway to summer. The popular "Down Home Family Reunion, A Celebration of African American Folk Life", is on the third weekend of August capturing summer's magic. The "Capital City Kwanzaa Festival" in December is the largest event of its kind in the state. Elegba's African dancers, drummers, singers, and masquerades invite you to join them for dance theatre, concerts, performance-lectures and workshops. Feel free to throw off your shoes and jump in. Be sure to call and find out what is scheduled during the time you will be visiting. When you visit, join their cultural history tour, "In the beginning... Virginia." Your group can choose to walk or board a bus through Richmond's African American history. Become absorbed in the interactive stories and the sites where monuments do not exist. Come to the downtown cultural center to see their collection of African arts and crafts.
