Location of Columbia Museum of Art Columbia Museum of Art The Columbia Museum of Art has an impressive collection ranging from the Renaissance to present day. Both European and American artists are well represented here. They also have a temporary traveling exhibit that will change every few months. The Italian Renaissance collection includes many beautiful paintings including a rare Botticelli called 'The Nativity' that is a fresco transferred to canvas. Besides painting there are also some wonderful 4th to 5th century sculptures and a Tiffany collection that includes some beautiful silver pieces as well as lamps, vases, and crystal. The highlight of the 19th century collection is a Monet 'The Seine at Giverny' which is an oil on canvas. Another painting I found interesting was one by Evelyn Pickering De Morgan. The face, hands, and feet are very detailed. The museum house two of her paintings, the only ones in the United States. American artists include a sculpture by Frederick Remington titled 'Bronco Buster' that was done in 1895. Some of the modern and contemporary art includes a work by Ken Carder that is untitled. It is a face in blue glass that is done in what is called hotworked glass. Another painting was one by Jane Fish entitled 'Diane's Vase' which is an oil on canvas that has very bright and vivid colors. KAT'S VIEW The Columbia Museum of Art was very nice. They had a secret garden room that you could look through gates. It was very cool. It is used for films and presentations. One of my favorite paintings was called 'Descent', it gave an underwater look. There was an untitled piece that looked like a sand image. Then there was something from the pictures of chocolate series. I wondered if anyone tried to eat it once! |
