Location of the Heyward-Washington House The Heyward-Washington House The location of the Heyward-Washington House is in the boundaries of the old Walled City (No. 72 in the 1694 Grand Model). The property was purchased by Colonel Daniel Heyward in 1770. He began construction of the current house in 1772. In 1773 he gave it to his son, Thomas Heyward, for a wedding present. Thomas and his wife, Elizabeth, lived there whenever they were in the city. Thomas quit using the house after Elizabeth died in childbirth. After that time Thomas rented the house out. In 1791, when George Washington visited Charleston, the town decided that Thomas Heyward's house would be the best place for him to stay. So for about a week President Washington lived in the house. He is said to have entertained many of the townspeople and also had an afternoon with some of the prominent ladies of Charleston. This visit is why the name Washington was added to make it the Heyward-Washington House. Today the house contains a valuable collection of eighteenth century Charleston-made furniture. Its quality and refinement reflect the wealth and sophistication of the colonial city. The furniture is truly beautiful and would be worth the tour even without the history of the house! KAT'S VIEW The Heyward-Washington House was very nice. There was a cabinet that was 13 different pieces put together just so that they could get it through the door. This I found very interesting. There was a garden there too. The garden was very nice. There were different types of roses, shrubs, and trees. |
