Location of Saint Michael's Episcopal Church Saint Michael's Episcopal Church Completed in 1761, this is the oldest church edifice in the city and one of the few city churches in America to retain its original design. It was here that President George Washington worshiped during his visit in 1791. The clock and ring of eight bells in St. Michael's steeple were imported in 1764. Except for short absences due to the Revolutionary War and again the Civil War, these bells have shared the lives of Charlestonians for more than 200 years. The gravesites around the churchyard have some magnificent headstones. There are many from the 1700's and 1800's. KAT'S VIEW The St. Michaels Episcopal church was awesome. We went and looked at the graveyard. The people were getting out of church when we got there. The gravestones were really old. I saw a bright green lizard in the graveyard. The sound of the bells ringing was pretty cool too. |
