Bark Vs. Rock The decision to use bark or rock to cover your flower beds is more of a matter of personnel preference than anything else. Wood is usually easier to work with, however, it doesn't hold up as well or last as long as rock. Rock, on the other hand, is more durable. If you do choose rock, make sure to install a weed barrier because weeds are very difficult to control once they get in. Chemical Safety If you have kids or animals and you are worried about using chemicals, then you have a couple of options. Most chemicals don't pose any danger once they are dry, so it is best to keep the kids and animals inside for a couple days. Always read the label before applying any chemicals to your yard. This is where you will find warnings and other safety information that can help you prevent any problems. Better to be safe than sorry!!! Pest Free Plants There are a few plants that will stay somewhat pest free. Trees like Gink, Dogwood, Spruce; Dwarf shrubs such as Junipers; and flowers like Chrysanthemums are some options. Water Conservation The best time to water is early in the morning or late in the evening when it is not as warm. During these times, less water will evaporate, so more will be absorbed into the ground and it won't dry out as fast. Another way to save water is to leave the water running longer, but do it less often. This will cause water to soak deep down into the soil and the ground will stay moist much longer. Weed By Hand, Chemicals And Tillers Weeding by hand is best. Chemicals such as roundup also work well, but you must be careful not to kill the plants you want to keep. If you use a tiller to weed your flowers beds, you will get rid of the weeds that are there, but you will also cultivate the soil and create an even better place for more weeds to grow. When To Mow Ideally, you should mow your lawn about every four days to a week. Your lawn's optimum length can be determined by taking a core sample and measuring the depth of the roots. Your grass should be the same length as it's roots. This usually ranges between 2 and 4 inches. Some people say the longer you keep it, the more difficult it becomes to maintain and you will have to mow more often. This is not always the truth. |
