Location of the Lyndon Bains Johnson Library Museum Lyndon Bains Johnson Library Museum The Lyndon Baines Johnson Library and Museum takes visitors back in time through six decades of American history in the exhibit America: 1908-1973. The permanent exhibit at the Library and Museum focuses on the story of those years and how LBJ and Lady Bird Johnson fit into those historic times. Their story is told in the context of their time. Through photographs, letters, music, sound effects and recorded commentary, the museum breathes life into the saga of a turbulent time and the man who rose to leadership as it unfolded. The exhibit continues through World War II and the Cold War, the era of Joe McCarthy and African Americans’ mounting demands for civil rights. Now the Johnson story is closely enmeshed in the larger history as LBJ moves up in the Congress to become the Senate’s most effective leader. Then comes the Kennedy years when Johnson serves as Vice President; the Bay of Pigs, the Cuban Missile Crisis when the world braces for nuclear war; the commitment of troops to Vietnam; the race for space and the assassination of the young President on the streets of Dallas. The rest of the exhibit focuses on the Johnson Presidency as LBJ guides the country through the painful days following Kennedy’s assassination, then sets out to wage war on poverty and the secure civil rights for all Americans. The Great Society is launched. The war in Vietnam escalates and divides the nation. The hotline is activated between the U.S. and the U.S.S.R. to avert conflict in the Middle East. Succeeding space flights bring astronauts closer to the moon. The Lyndon Baines Johnson Library and Museum is one of 10 presidential libraries administered by the National Archives and Records Administration. The Library houses forty five million pages of historical documents including the papers from the entire public career of Lyndon Baines Johnson and those of his close associates. These papers and the vast administrative files from the presidency are used on a daily basis by researchers and scholars. |
