In 1909, Mrs. Sonora Louise Smart Dodd decided there should be a special day for recognizing fathers. She wanted a way to honor her father, William Jackson Smart, a Civil War veteran who raised his six children by himself after his wife died. Father's Day was first observed in Spokane, Washington, Mrs. Dodd's hometown, in 1910. but it wasn't until 1972 that President Richard Nixon made Father's Day an official national holiday, celebrated each year on the third Sunday in June. |
