Location of Jamestown Settlement Ships Jamestown Settlement Board the three ships that brought the first English colonists here in 1607. They left in December 1606 from England and arrived here in May 1607. The three ships carried 105 passengers and only one died on the trip. The Godspeed was a typical small merchant trader ship. It had 13 crew members and carried 39 passengers. This replica is a little smaller that the actual ship was but you can get the idea of how miserable the trip across the Atlantic was for them. The Discovery was the smallest ship. It did not make the return trip to England, but was used instead to explore the rivers of the Chesapeake Bay. It was captained by John Ratcliffe and had a crew of 9 and carried 12 passengers. The Susan Constant was the flagship of the three. It is the largest and had a crew of 17 and carried 54 passengers. This ship also carried the majority of the supplies that the colonists brought with them. Once the colony was established, this ship returned to England never returning to the colonies and continued on as an ordinary trading vessel. KAT'S VIEW The boats were the Susan Constant, Discovery, and Godspeed. The largest one was the Susan Constant. It had larger bunks in one area, in another you would have to sleep on the barrels. How uncomfortable. The Discovery was the smallest. Godspeed was covered with ropes, they were everywhere. |
