Location of Historic Jamestowne Historic Jamestowne Historic Jamestowne is a part of the Colonial National Historical Park along with Yorktown Battlefield and the Colonial Parkway. This is the site of the original settlement of the first English settlers to America. Explore the area and see where these courageous settlers began. Near the entrance to the park is the glass house.See artisans in period costume blow the glass just like was done in the 1600's. The area is set up to replicate the actual glass house that was found. After watching the glassblowers, stroll down the path to the ruins of the actual glass house where you can the remains of the ovens. Continue on into the park to the settlement. Here you will find the statues of Pocahontas and John Smith. There is also the commemorative tower from 1907 that was built to celebrate the first 300 years. See the remains of the church from 1640. There is still the original church tower and you can see the original walls that the present walls were built over. Take the path around the Towne Site that include the excavated ruins of early homes and public buildings. There is current archaeological excavation and you can watch the work in progress. Most recently, there has been a human bones found that were in a coffin with a ceremonial spear. It is believed that these are of a wealthy and/or influential person of the colonists because at the time they did not use coffins but would simply bury the bodies in the ground. There is speculation of who the person is and they are working on this identification. KAT'S VIEW The town site was nice. There were several geese. They were everywhere. You could watch the archaeological stuff there too. In the church some of the original brickwork there was blue from age. Blue! The glass house I found very interesting. I got to watch them make glasswork. I learned what made different colors in glass. Green glass is natural with no additives. Yellow has silver added, red has copper or gold added, blue has cobalt added, brown has carbon added, white has tin added, and clear has manganese added. |
